Auditions
Become a student at the Bolshoi School
Some children know from a very young age what they want to be when they grow up. Many of them end up discovering it by practicing some physical activity, such as dancing, for example, and falling in love with it to the point of turning it into a profession.
Paving the way for children to make their dreams come true, our School works with auditions to give new opportunities to those who want to become a Bolshoi Brasil student, children and young people with or without dance knowledge from 9 to 17 years old.
How do Auditions work?
National Selection
The National Selection is held annually for children aged 9 to 11 who live in Brazil or abroad and do not need to have knowledge of dance and is divided into two stages.
► Pre-Selection: In the first stage, professionals from the Institution visit public schools, NGOs, social projects, dance schools (according to the School's schedule) or by video, so that the process is democratic and awakens interest in dance and analyzes physical and artistic skills such as flexibility, stage projection, posture and body type. Candidates with the greatest potential are selected to participate in the second stage, which is held in person at the School, in Joinville.
► Selection: In the last stage, all pre-selected children meet for the big final test. Candidates are evaluated in two ways. The first evaluation is the medical-physiotherapy evaluation, when physiotherapists, doctors and physical education teachers analyze posture, structure and physical and motor skills, heart and respiratory rate, body mass percentage and somatotype, strength, muscles and joints. The second evaluation is the artistic-musical and cognitive evaluation, when dance professionals, musicians and teachers evaluate the technical and artistic skills, musicality, stage projection and also the intellectual performance of the candidates.
It is the combination of all these professional data that leads us to the children who are most suitable at this time to study and develop in the Vaganova method, applied at the Bolshoi School. After all these tests have been carried out, we inform the list of approved candidates via the website and social networks.
Special Call
Another way to enter the Bolshoi School is through the Special Call, intended for dancers with dance knowledge from the age of 11. The process also occurs in two stages and can be done in person or by video according to the institution's schedule.
► Pre-Selection: In the first phase, candidates participate in a classical ballet class, with barre and center exercises, where technical level, balance, musicality, turns, jumps and elasticity are evaluated, in addition to the use of pointe shoes for girls.
► Special Call: In the second phase, approved candidates come to the Bolshoi School headquarters (on a previously scheduled date), where they participate in classical dance classes for five days, joining a group specific to their age. During this period, physiotherapy assessments are carried out, analyzing muscles, joints and possible postural deviations, in addition to checking specific skills for classical ballet. On the last day, the candidate is evaluated by a panel composed of teachers from the Bolshoi School. After the process is completed, the list of approved candidates is published on the Institution's official channels.
Why participate in the process?
Joining the Bolshoi Theater School in Brazil is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for many children. There, students learn discipline and responsibility and develop in the professional field. Ballet requires a lot of discipline, focus and perseverance, and this will contribute to the child's professional development, in addition to understanding their role in society, becoming a more aware and prepared citizen for life. The course lasts eight years and, on average, children spend 6 hours a day at the School, between curriculum activities and rehearsals. First-year students have few rehearsals because they are beginning to develop their stage skills, but they are already part of a schedule with 4 hours of classes that range from classical dance to popular dance, Brazilian dance, gymnastics and theoretical subjects on music and art. In addition, the children receive a 100% free scholarship, with complementary meals (snacks and lunch), uniforms, school transportation and, of course, training to become professional dancers. Housing and regular education are paid for by the family.
